Why music in Serious Games?

Why would we use music in e-learning, gamification or serious games? We always did without... What's there to be gained? 6 reasons to use music:

1. More fun with music!

The lay-out of a textdocument has a huge influence on how we experience text. Likewise music has the same influence. It is like lay-out for our ears, to make your message clearer, lighter and vibrant.

2. Reward (and punishment)

Reward and punishment are keyconcepts in the psychology of learning. 'Unfortunately' we can't give candy and electric shocks during gameplay.

oor An easier and more acceptible way is to use music. In its simplest form: a bell for a good answer, a buzzer for a mistake. But more subtle options are possible, by adapting the colour of the background music to the progress of the player.

3. Emotion (1)

Emotions influence learning and reproduction. Maybe you know the safety protocol inside out when relaxed. But in stress, can you act to it?

oor Music can add stress to any situation. Music can trigger many more emotions that influence your performance: Boredom, distraction, melancholy, comfort, anger, you name it.

4. Emotion (2)

In some knowledge and skills brains aren't enough. We also have to take our emotions into account. Else it would be pointless.
oor
Think softskills. Empathy without feeling is an empty concept. Music can help to make the link from mind to emotion.

5. Music as performance-enhancing substance

Music can help to push your boundaries. I've seen people double their performance time in a planking exercise by playing supportive music.

Soldiers can march longer when they sing songs, in the cotton fields workers sang to keep on going. When used properly music can contribute to stamina, focus and concentration.

6. Be distinctive

Use of music isn't wide-spread in e-learning. You can create surplus value by adding a music score. The impact of your game will grow and your clients will notice.

Finally

Of course in some cases music will be counter-productive. It should be used wisely, with a clear vision. Only implement music that aims for your specific goals. I'll be happy to think along with you.
